Mexican Consul Miguel Escobar read Mexico's stance on vigilantism to about 10 reporters Tuesday.
Escobar said that on Feb. 10, 2005 the Mexican government sent the U.S. a diplomatic note, which expressed Mexico's concern with the Minuteman Project and asked that state and federal measures be taken to safeguard the rights of Mexicans crossing the border illegally into the U.S.
"The Mexican government considers it unacceptable that certain people are detaining Mexican migrants," Escobar said, reading from a prepared statement.
While condemning the act of detaining migrants and the Minuteman Project, the Mexican government has initiated several forums that seek to continue looking for mechanisms that ensure that Mexican migration is legal, orderly and respectful to the U.S., Escobar said.
Mexican consulates in Arizona have been instructed to provide aid to migrants, especially if migrants have been abused by members of citizens patrol groups.
As a result, Mexico's Secretary of Exterior Relations along with U.S. civil rights organizations have established legal guidelines that migrants can take in case they are mistreated.
