Straw bale construction at Farmers Market

Published/Last Modified on Saturday, June 3, 2006 8:25 AM MDT

Straw Bale construction will be the featured topic at the June 3 Bisbee Farmers Market. The market starts at 8 a.m. so arrive early and buy fresh farm products while the selection is best.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until noon, Bisbee owner-builders Dave and Edna Weigel and Whetstone owner-builders Robert Guerra and Jeff Ofstedahl will discuss straw bale construction and earth-based plaster under the big "special events" tree.

They will bring photos of their homes and be prepared to explain basic construction methods and the advantages of using natural materials in the creation of energy-efficient homes. They will stack a few bales and demonstrate application of earth-based plaster.

Anyone interested in gaining hands-on plastering experience should wear clothes they don't mind getting muddy.

In addition to learning about straw bale construction, check out the wide variety of local crafts and baked goods and enjoy live music by Vince Robel.

The Bisbee Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays in Vista Park in the Warren section of Bisbee. It is co-sponsored by the City of Bisbee and the Bisbee Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call Suzi Pretty at 234-3306. To get to Vista Park from the Bisbee traffic roundabout, take the Bisbee Road exit and continue until you reach Vista Park on the left.
