4th Annual Solar Cook-off and Expo at Bisbee Farmers Market

Published/Last Modified on Friday, June 9, 2006 6:50 PM MDT

The 4th Annual Solar Cook-off and Expo will be held on June 10at the Bisbee Farmers Market. Solar cooks should bring their ovens and their favorite dish to prepare in the sun. The market, which is normally open from 8 a.m. to noon, will stay open until 1 p.m. to allow mid-day cooking. Solar chefs will hold a pot luck at the end of the expo and can share techniques all morning. Some ovens are slow cookers while others exceed 350 degrees and can cook most anything a conventional oven can. Solar cooking doesn't heat up the kitchen and uses free energy from the sun. Solar ovens, solar cookbooks and plans for building solar cookers will be for sale. Visit solar vendors who sell and demonstrate solar hot water heaters, solar well pumps, photovoltaic systems and more. Anyone interested in purchasing a solar oven should ask about the group buy available only at the Expo.

Local blackberry season has started and is expected to continue about a month. Bring a cooler and arrive early for the best selection of farm-fresh produce then visit the wide variety of vendors selling craft items and enjoy live entertainment. Obscure Productions will do a few scenes from their Shakespeare in the Park production of Midsummer's Night Dream starting about 9 a.m. then the Partners will provide live country dance music.

The Bisbee Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays in Vista Park in the Warren section of Bisbee. It is co-sponsored by the City of Bisbee and the Bisbee Chamber of Commerce.
