ELGIN - Two boys flown by helicopter to University Medical Center in Tucson are improving from injuries they sustained in a head-on collision that occurred Sunday, a UMC spokeswoman said.

Eleven-year-old Cristobal Romero of Huachuca City is in fair condition and Santos Vasquez, 13, of Douglas is in good condition, Loretta McKenzie said.

According to James Oien, public information officer for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, both boys were in serious condition when admitted to UMC. Romero sustained a broken leg and Vasquez a broken femur and ankle. Neither of the two were wearing seat belts.

Six people were injured in the accident that occurred at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday at mile post 42 on Highway 82 near Upper Elgin Road. Four other accident victims were transported to Sierra Vista Regional Health Center by ambulance.

All four sustained minor injuries, were treated and released.

Jose H. Romo-Romero, 20, of Huachuca City was cited for the accident. According to Oien's report, Romero was eastbound when he fell asleep at the wheel and drifted to the right. He sideswiped a guardrail, awoke suddenly, steered to the left and overcorrected, which caused his vehicle to veer to the wrong side of the roadway. His 1995 Ford Mustang then collided into a vehicle driven by Charles Rice of Tucson.

Rice's wife was the only passenger in that vehicle. Both were wearing seatbelts and sustained minor injuries.

One other passenger in Romero's vehicle, David Vasquez, 11, of Douglas, also received minor injuries. None of the four people in Romero's vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Romo-Romero was cited for failure to control his vehicle and no seat belts in use, Oien said.
