MESA, Ariz. (AP) - James Dwyer, director of media for the Archdiocese of Chicago since December 1997, has been hired as the new information officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

He replaces Mary Jo West, who worked three years for the diocese and is leaving to become a spokeswoman for Bashas' supermarkets.
West had previously worked for TV news stations and was the first woman news anchor in the Phoenix metropolitan area in 1976 when she was at KOOL-TV, now KSAZ-TV.
The Rev. Fred Adamson, moderator of the curia, credited West with developing the weekly TV mass and turning it into an hourlong live program, training diocesan staff to work with reporters and making the diocese's Web site inviting.
West became the diocese's spokeswoman in 2003 as it was recovering from investigations into sexual misconduct by priests and the resignation of Bishop Thomas O'Brien, who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run.
