September monsoons bring more rain, more weeds

The monsoon rains that moved through Douglas during the weekend brought slow, steady moisture into an area that was considered stricken by drought.

Now, with so much rain, the grass and especially the weeds, are having fertile ground for growth.

As a result, the The City of Douglas' Code Enforcement officers would like to remind residents here about keeping their yards and property clear of weeds.

Property owners are also responsible for public rights of way around their property.

These rights of way include the area between the property line and the curb or pavement.

It also includes up to the centerline of the alley along one end of the property to the other.

Items that could be considered a violation are overgrowth of vegetation, accumulated trash, liter, debris, furniture in the alleyways or side and front yards.

Allowing the overgrowth to go unchecked can also cause a fire hazard when the weeds begin to dry.

Code enforcement officers encourage residents to clean the overgrowth soon before it begins to flower and seed.

If an herbicide is going to be used, read the instructions carefully.

Ortho.com suggests to "Apply to bare ground or when weeds are present and if weeds are taller than six inches, cut them down before application. For best result apply when daytime temperatures are at least 60 degrees."
