What seemed to be a typical end-of-the-week Friday afternoon at Joe Carlson Elementary School turned out to be a parent's worst nightmare.

Armida Lugo of Douglas was waiting in the parking lot as school let out so she could drive her child home. What she did not see was a 9-year-old girl bend down in front of her car to tie her shoe.

When Lugo's child got into the car, Lugo put the car into drive and drove directly into the 9-year-old girl.

The girl was knocked to the ground and the car ran over her left upper thigh.

Lugo became aware of the situation as teachers and parents located in the parking lot began to yell for her to stop driving.

DFD transported the girl to the airport where she was airlifted to Tucson to be examined for injuries.

The girl was in stable condition when she was put onto a stretcher in the parking lot.

Her current condition is unknown.

No one else on the scene was injured.

Lugo was cited for driving for unlicensed driving.
