With the winter holidays comes the season of giving. And what better way to give to the community than to become a volunteer for the Salvation Army's Christmas Drive, where each year they raise money for the less fortunate.

Each year, on the day after Thanksgiving, these volunteers can be seen ringing bells at Food City, Safeway and Wal-Mart.

"These volunteers are instrumental in helping raise money for the members of this community," said Anna Luna, the Board President of the Salvation Army. "The money is used to help residents with their heating or lighting utilities."

At other times, the money goes to help toward food, transportation or personal home heating units.

"But mostly we try to help with the energy bills that rise during the winter season," Luna said.

The money has also gone to help with the St Vincent De Paul's Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas baskets for the less fortunate and for donations to the House of Hope, a shelter for battered women in Douglas.

"In the previous years, the money raised by the volunteers have made it possible to continue to give to our community," she said. "And by becoming a volunteer, you can ensure that we'll keep on giving."

This year's volunteers are planning their Kettle Drives at Food City, Safeway and Wal-Mart from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. The drives are scheduled for November 25 and 26; December 2 and 3; December 9 and 10 and December 16 and 17.

Anyone interested in volunteering his or her time on these weekends can contact Tina Jaime at 805-1832 or Anna Luna at 364-8906.
