Area businesses told to watch for counterfeit money

SIERRA VISTA - The Cochise County Sheriff's Department asks business owners to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills.


Five different $50 bills have been brought to authorities' attention this week at the Circle K on Highway 92, sheriff's department spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

The U.S. Secret Service, which is the law enforcement agency charged with investigating counterfeit U.S. currency, is looking into these recent fake money incidents, Capas said.

Counterfeit-bill-detector pens can be used to determine if bills are fake, Capas said. These can be purchased at various office supply stores.

On Monday, two different people each passed $50 bills at the Circle K, Capas said. On Tuesday, three more $50 bills surfaced at the Circle K. There are surveillance cameras in the store, she noted.

Information about any suspicious bills should be called into the sheriff's department at 432-9500.
