BISBEE - An unidentified Mexican man was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent Friday on U.S. soil near Naco, authorities confirmed.

According to information from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector headquarters, the shooting took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. at a border area about 5 miles east of Bisbee/Naco.

The confrontation began as a rock-throwing incident, said Lt. Commander Mark Dannels of the Sheriff's Office.

"The officer was in fear of his life and took the actions he deemed appropriate," Dannels said.

The victim's identity had not been released as of press time. Border Patrol spokesman Jesus Rodriguez said the man was a Mexican national in his 20s.

Mexican Consul in Douglas Oscar De la Torre had no further information on the man's identity or the details of this death.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Dannels and Rodriguez said, with the Sheriff's Office acting as the lead investigative agency.

The Border Patrol agent involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Rodriguez said.
