At about 11a.m. Thursday customs officers on routine inspection noticed an empty tractor-trailer. In order to speed the inspection process, inspectors used their Vehicle and Container Inspection System (VACIS) to look at the trailer's structure.
During the inspection they noticed something unusual about the trailer, Levin said. The inspectors removed portions of the wall, and found 1,130 packages of what later was identified as marijuana.
The 803 pounds of marijuana is the largest seizure at the Douglas port this fiscal year, Levin said. Since Oct. 1, 2006 CBP officers at the port have stopped 55 attempts to smuggle marijuana into the U.S. They have seized almost 5,000 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $16 million, he said.
