Enthusiastic storytellers visit Douglas elementary classrooms

Students in Brian Long's first-grade class at Stevenson Elementary School literally jumped out of their seats to welcome a special guest to story time this week.

"Dora in the Deep Sea," "Dora's Halloween Adventure," and "Dora's Opposites," in particular, got the kids talking and engaged in the special story time. The stories were enthusiastically told by Cochise College Vice President for Information Technology Carlos Cartagena. He is among more than a dozen college employees participating in the Community Reads program sponsored by the Cochise Area Reading Council.

"These were books my daughter gave me, so I knew the kids would like them," Cartagena said. "I am honored to be part of the Community Reads program and thoroughly enjoy engaging the students in story telling activities."

College employees also are visiting classes at Joe Carlson and Faras elementary schools. Readers include faculty members in reading, psychology and math, as well as staff members from all over campus. Dr. Karen Nicodemus, college president, and Chuck Hoyack, dean of the Douglas Campus, will read next week. The schedule is coordinated by Marguerite Conners, coordinator of Career Services at the Douglas Campus, and Joan Reichel, a member of the reading council and an employee in the Douglas High School library.

Community leaders throughout the area take part in the program each year.
