Mr Lincoln pays a visit to school board

President Abraham Lincoln, just prior to his upcoming birthday, made a brief visit to the Tuesday Douglas Unified School District Governing Board meeting.


Mr. Lincoln (Eduardo Molina) and his Faras fifth grade class made a five-minute PowerPoint presentation about the 16th president.

The presentation was put together by members of the class, and presenting the information was Jaime Countryman, Raul Montano, Crystal Ramirez and Diana Grijalva.

Following the presentation the board applauded their efforts.

In other action, the board:

ˆ Approved School Psychologist hire, Paul Harrison, at an hourly rate of $72.40.

ˆ Approved stipend in the amount of $3,000 for Heather Shake for certification and teaching in special education.

ˆ Approved Secretary II (Migrant) hire, Bertha Verdugo, at an hourly rate of $11.93; Data Support Clerk (OSI) hire, Leyla Secheslingloff, at an hourly rate of $10.05; Health Aide (DHS) hire, Lucinda Gonzales, at an hourly rate of $7.80; and DHS Store instructional aide hire, Maria Figueroa, at an hourly rate of $8.70 (Category VII)

ˆ Approved Special Ed (HMS) instructional aide hires, Elizabeth Acosta, Sandra Alvarado and Dulce Rodriguez, at an hourly rate of $8 70.

ˆ Approved Custodian (roving) hire, Sergio Ruvalcaba, at an hourly rate of $8.38; Receptionist (Central Office) hire, Jo Ann Wright, at an hourly rate of $8.23.

ˆ Approved Instructional Aide (ELC) hire, Dalila Romero, at an hourly rate of $8.70.

ˆ Approved the following volunteers: Alexa Hernandez - DHS girls softball volunteer coach; Gina Tartaglia - DHS girls softball volunteer coach; Veronica Valencia - parent (ELC); Rosa Leyva - parent (ELC); Chloe Ramsden - DHS student tutor @ Joe Carlson; and Daniel Ballesteros - DHS student Volunteer @ Joe Carlson.

ˆ Approved 301 performance pay plans for middle school and high school counselors.

ˆ Approved amendment to Annual Financial Report for 2004/2005.

ˆ Approved excess utilities report to be submitted to AZ Department of Education pursuant to A.RS. §15-910.03.

ˆ Approved award for Exceptional Educational Service3s and Educational Based Services; and Tara Weber-Speech Therapy Services; Thunderbird Therapy Services Jim Kuhn-Speech Therapy, Paul Harrison, Psychologist, IN-Speech, provider of all requested services, and Cumberland Therapy Services-Provider of all requested services.

ˆ Approved training agreement with Staff Development for Educators (SDE) for professional development in differentiated instruction for staff at Joe Carlson and Clawson elementary schools.

ˆ Approved out of state travel for Minerva Kong to attend the Celebrating Educational Opportunities for Hispanic Students conference in Albuquerque, NM on March 23-25, 2007; and for Mr. Ray Shelton and a group of DHS seniors to visit Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM on February 15, 2007

ˆ Approved Cochise County Juvenile Court system as a sole source provider for a Juvenile Probation Officer to teach Law Related Education for three sites: Douglas High School, Ray Borane Middle School and Huber Middle School.

ˆ Approved intergovernmental agreement with Cochise County, Superior Court, for a Juvenile Probation Officer GPO) in accordance with the School Safety Program grant.

There will be no school on February 19, 2007 - Presidents' Day Holiday -All schools, school offices, central administration and central receiving offices will be closed.
