BISBEE - A judge has ordered that a local man accused of passing counterfeit money be released on his own recognizance.

Thomas Cosentino, 34, of Hereford had been held at the county jail with bond set at $50,000 since his arrest Jan 19. But his attorney, Joel Larson, successfully lobbied Superior Court Judge Stephen Desens yesterday to release Cosentino on the grounds that he has no prior felony convictions, he is a local resident and he is gainfully employed.

According to Sierra Vista police, witness statements and surveillance video footage led them to accuse Cosentino of passing fake $20 bills at Carl's Jr., Arby's and Ace Hardware on Jan. 15.

Cosentino allegedly had a fake bill in his pocket at the time of his arrest, and officers say they found another in his apartment during a search.

Cosentino is charged with three counts of passing forged bills and two counts of possessing a forged instrument.

His trial is scheduled to begin May 15.
