TUCSON - The Douglas Lady Bulldogs tennis team kicked off league play Wednesday with an impressive 8-1 win over Gila Regional foe Desert View.

Douglas' tennis coach Paula Shelton said afterwards this was one of the most dominating performances her team has had against Desert View.

"I don't think they were expecting us to be as strong as we were," she said.

The most games Desert View got off a Douglas player Wednesday was four and that came in No. 1 singles where Evelyn Owen posted a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Alexis Romero, playing in the No. 2 spot, was a 6-0, 6-0 winner.

Cynthia Nunez, playing in the No. 3 spot, was a 6-2, 6-1 winner.

At No. 4 singles Katrina Flores was a 6-2, 6-2 winner.

Crissy Gage, playing at No. 5 singles, was a 6-0, 6-0 winner and Renee Morales, playing at No. 6 singles, was a 6-0, 6-1 winner.

In doubles play Owen and Romero were 8-6 winners.

Nunez and Gage won their match 8-5 and Flores and Morales lost their match 6-8.

In doubles play, Skinner and Melgoza were 8-3 winners, Ortiz and Garcia also won by the same score, Padilla and Vildosola were 8-4 winners and Montano and Leyva 6-2 winners.

Coach Shelton said her team really played well Wednesday and she feels her team is starting to play the way it practices.

"This was a very good win for us," the coach said.

The Lady Bulldogs are back on the court today taking on Sabino in a non-conference game in Tucson.

Due to some recent wind damage at Sabino today's match will be a varsity only match as some of the courts are unplayable.
