Bird Walk


Birders of all levels are invited to participate in upcoming bird walks sponsored by the Friends of the San Pedro River. A walk is scheduled for March 24 and departs from the San Pedro House, 9800 E. Hwy. 90, Sierra Vista at 8:00 am.

There is no charge for the walks, however, donations are accepted to support docent programs. For more information call 459-2555.

San Pedro River Walks

Join docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River on an interpretive walk along the river March 24, 2007. Walks depart from the San Pedro House near Sierra Vista at 9:00am.

The San Pedro River features some of the richest wildlife habitat in the United States. Here you'll find 82 species of mammals, dozens of reptiles and amphibians and nearly 350 species of birds. It is the last free flowing river in the Southwest and has been designated one of the Last Great Places by the Nature Conservancy.

There is no charge for the walks, however donations are accepted to support the docent programs. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring drinking water and use sun protection. For more information call (520) 459-2555.

Birding Walks

The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park (EOP), also known as the waste water treatment plant, is open for bird walks each Sunday morning.

The walks take about 2 hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO), Huachuca Audubon Society (HAS) and the Friends of the San Pedro River (FSPR).

The next walk begins at 8 a.m, March 18 and departs from the viewing platform inside the EOP. The entrance is located on SR 90 between mileage markers 324 and 325 on the north side of the highway. All tours are FREE, although SABO, HAS and FSPR all accept donations.

The walks are limited to 20 people and are filled on a first come, first served basis. Special walks for large groups and walks on days other than Sunday can be arranged. Contact Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) at (520) 432-1388 for more information.

Docent training offered

Do you have a love of nature? Are you interested in sharing that love with others in the community? Would you like to learn more about the San Pedro River environment? The Friends of the San Pedro River (FSPR) are looking for people with these qualities to be docents.

The FSPR Docent Training Class begins April 5 in Sierra Vista. Classes are conducted over four Thursday evenings (7PM-10PM) and three Saturday mornings (8AM-Noon) during the month of April. Classes will be presented by local experts on birds, plants, insects, hydrology, geology, and much, much more. The cost is only $25 (for materials and is refundable after 50 hours of "docenting.")

The San Pedro River is a wonderful local resource. Learn more about it and the wildlife and share that knowledge with other. The training is fun, informative and, as a docent, you get to work with great people. The Huachuca Audubon Society will offer a course, Introduction to Bird-watching, in March and April.

Here is an opportunity to get a simple, practical introduction to the sport of bird-watching, with an emphasis on how to identify the local Sierra Vista birds. The class consists of four Thursday evening classes and two Saturday field trips to practice what has been learned.

Classes will be held at the Ramsey Canyon Preserve Visitor's Center, located at the upper end of Ramsey Canyon Road, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The classes are as follows:

- Class 1 - Getting started, March 8. Topics: What is it about birds? Biology of birds. Overview of our local specialties. Parts of a bird, and what they tell us about the bird. Choosing optics: binoculars, telescopes. How to dress and behave in the field. Online resources, books and magazines, clubs and organizations.

- Class 2 - How to identify birds, March 15. Topics: Field marks. GISS (general impression of size and structure). Molt sequences: age and time of year. Using behavior, habitat, status and occurrence. How to use field guides and checklists. Listening to birds.

- Classes 3 and 4 - Some important families of birds, March 22 and 29. Topics: hawks, ducks, doves, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, flycatchers, owls, warblers, sparrows, blackbirds. Local birding hotspots.

- Field trip 1 - April 7, 8 to 11 a.m. San Pedro River.

- Field trip 2 - April 14, 8 to 11 a.m. Ramsey Canyon Preserve.

Polish feast set for Portal March 30

Only forty people will get to savor a Polish Feast, from pazeska, herrings in sour cream with crisp bread , to Cracow Pastry Layer Cake at 6:00 P. M. Friday, March 30 in the Portal Rescue Classroom just up the hill from Portal Store. Side dishes like cabbage rolls, pierogi, and salads will accompany the national dish of Poland, Bigos, a hearty stew of various meats, prepared by Master of Ceremonies, Jacek Gawron. "Jack" has been honored with a Polish National Award. He is proud of the heritage and traditions he will share with the feasters.

Charge is $25 per person. Reservations must be made by March 25 with either Zola Stolz at 558-1124 or Fran Zweifel at 558-2236. Some reservations are already in, so don't delay. Proceeds go to Portal Rescue, an all-volunteer force, which provides fire protection and skilled emergency medical aid in the area.
