Douglas' 4x800 relay team of Maria Campoy, Kristi Cormier, Melia Skinner and Johanna Urquijo came in sixth with a time of 11:28.

After the meet Douglas' track coaches Ron Ellsworth and Donna Savill admitted this year's meet was huge success but a lot of it had to do with everything coming together at the right time.

Savill was quick to thank all the volunteers who really stepped up Friday and helped with their designated assignments.

"They've done this for several years so they know how the meet should work," she said. "They really pulled it off Friday."

Savill also wanted to acknowledge Douglas' trainer Mitch Nelson who was busy Friday. In the girls 300 hurdles Friday he had three injuries in two separate heats.

"He's so prompt, so professional," Savill said. "He did a great job of taking care of these athletes."

Ellsworth acknowledged Javier Baca and his crew for the electronic timing system that worked to perfection Friday.

The electronic timing system was set up to also photograph the finish line so if there was a photo finish the proper winner would be credited.

"He and his staff did a great job," Ellsworth said. "Things ran very smoothly all day long."

Both coaches agree when there are over 900 entries and they are running around trying to help keep things going it's hard to focus on the athletes who are competing and the assistant coaches stepped up there.

Ellsworth said from what he saw he was pleased with how his team competed Friday.

"I thought our times and distances were very good," he said. Douglas was the only 4A Division II School there and schools from the 1A, 2A, 4A Division I and 5A were down competing making for better competition.

Savill said she had athletes on her team that recorded personal bests and that's all she wanted was for them to improve.

"When you compete with high caliber competition you perform at a high level and we did that today," she said. "I think some of our athletes surprised themselves."

"This was one of our better meets," Coach Ellsworth said. "I am very happy."

"It was a good meet," Savill added.

Due to spring break this next week the DHS track teams will be off and won't compete again until March 21 when they head to Tucson for a tri-meet with Catalina and Cholla.
