Bulldogs beat Arkansas team at Sahuarita baseball tourney

TUCSON -The Douglas Bulldogs got into the win column Friday beating Rogers, Ark. 6-5 in the third round of the Sahuarita Invitational.


The Bulldogs, 1-2 in the tournament, 3-5-1 overall, have a doubleheader today facing Cienega this morning before battling an unknown opponent this afternoon.

Douglas led Rogers 2-0 Friday only to surrender five runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings as Arkansas rallied to lead 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh and Jesus Bonicichi's double scored Jake Tadeo with the tying run. Bonicichi then scored the winning run on Pedro Cabrera's base hit.

Kyle Cormier started the game on the mound for Douglas and went six innings giving up three runs off seven hits. Andrew Rojas threw one inning in relief giving up two runs off two hits getting the win.

The Bulldogs had 10 hits in the game. Tadeo hit 2 for 2, Jorge Renova 2 for 3, Cormier 1 for 2, Fabian Ochoa and Alexis Aguirre each were 1 for 3 and Jerry Acosta, Bonicichi and Cabrera each were 1 for 4

Douglas' baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said his team did a good job of putting four hits together and scoring four runs to win the game in the bottom half of the seventh.

Rojas said this Arkansas team was a good club that was coming off a win over Sahuarita who beat the Dogs on Wednesday.

"It was nice seeing somebody different," he said. "They're a good team."

Junior varsity

In junior varsity play Thursday the Douglas JV's beat Rincon's JV's 10-3.

Jesus Cuevas, Aldo Figueroa and Victor Gomez each threw in the game.

Douglas used a three run third to take a 4-0 lead. Rincon scored twice in the bottom half of the third and once again in the fourth pulling within two at 5-3.

The Bulldogs responded with a two run fifth and a three run sixth taking the 10-3 edge.

Juan Mariscal hit 2 for 3 for Douglas and had an RBI. Michael Davila was 2 for 4, Ryan Valencia 1 for 2 with a RBI, Charles Hill 1 for 3, Jerry Altamirano 1 for 3 with three RBI's and Cuevas was 1 for 4

"We committed too many errors but the kids got it done," Douglas' coach Levi Salazar said.

The Bulldogs, 3-0, will host Amphi's JV's March 15 at 4 p.m. at Copper King Stadium.

Freshmen

The Douglas freshmen were shutout 6-0 by Catalina Foothill's freshmen Wednesday.

Douglas had just two base runners all afternoon. Hector Grijalva had the Bulldogs lone hit and Victor Machado reached on a walk.

The Bulldogs committed four errors behind the pitching of Mark Alday who threw four and two-thirds innings and gave up five runs.

Ramon Acosta threw an inning and a third in relief and gave up one run.
