DOUGLAS - The Cochise College baseball team continues to have its way with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.

On Tuesday, the Apaches swept Glendale 2-0 in the first game behind six shutout innings from Carlos Chavez and in the second, routed the Gauchos 12-1 in a game stopped after seven innings because of the 10-run rule. The pair of wins pushed Cochise to 23-2 on the season, the best mark through 25 games the program has enjoyed in head coach Todd Inglehart's seven-year coaching career.

This weekend in Mesa, the Apaches cross the halfway mark of their season, playing a doubleheader at Mesa Community College.

"We started last year 18-1 but fell off. This group's a lot different," Inglehart said. "We've come a long way since the fall. We're young and we have a lot of freshmen who are trying to adapt to the college game."

Chavez, a Douglas High grad, struck out six and allowed only three hits in the first win over Glendale. Brendan McDonald, of Australia, earned his league-leading fifth save striking out two in a perfect ninth.

Cochise staked Chavez to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kevin Hussey hit a sacrifice fly to score Will Campbell from third.

In the fourth, the Apaches put up an insurance run as Rafael Valenzuela singled Campbell in. Diego Soto got the pitching win in the second game, throwing six, two-hit, shutout innings.

Campbell went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Valenzuela went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI.

After Saturday's doubleheader, the Apaches will face every Division I team in the ACCAC after beating every team in Division II, except Scottsdale Community College, which is responsible for one of the Apaches' losses.

Cochise has rematches coming with Division I Eastern Arizona and Chandler-Gilbert, but won't get another crack at Scottsdale.

"I'm excited but we're only halfway through," Inglehart said. "We're 11-1 and in first place in our conference, but there's a long way to go."

Next Thursday, the Apaches take a break from the conference grind and participate in the Triple Crown Tournament at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson alongside the spring training major leaguers.
