BISBEE - Presiding Judge Wallace R. Hoggatt announced Monday that Donna M. Beumler has been selected as the new judge pro tem for the Superior Court of Cochise County.

Beumler was ranked the highest among the three top applicants chosen last week by a selection committee, a press release from the Superior Court said.

Hoggatt said, "This was a difficult decision. Any one of the applicants would be an excellent judge. After due consideration, Donna Beumler is the best choice to fill that vacancy."

Beumler is pleased with the decision since she has sought a court appointment for a number of years.

"I have 22 years of experience in practicing law. I started in 1985 in California and also served as a prosecutor for Pima County. I'm sure there will be a learning curve, but it will be a short one," she said. "I'm ready for a new challenge."

She has served in the county's legal defender's office since 1998, served as the president of the Cochise County Chapter of the Arizona Women Lawyers Association and the county Criminal Justice Task Force.

The county board of supervisors must approve her appointment, and that is scheduled for today's meeting, noted Hoggatt. Once the appointment is approved by the supervisors, it will go to Ruth McGregor, chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, for finalization.

"I must also acknowledge the work of this outstanding committee, chaired by retired judge James Riley, and included ten other members from through-out the county. They had a great challenge and they performed with great diligence," Hoggatt said.
