The Arizona 6-Day Race will take place again this weekend beginning Sunday at noon at the 15th Street Park in Douglas.

Event organizer Gary Cross has 15 other people lined up (besides himself) to take part in this event including two-time winner John Radich of California.

In addition to Cross and Radich there will be Jerry Schuster of Arizona, Ron Vertrees and Bill Dickey both of California, John McGuire of Colorado, Benny Gutierrez, Maria Celis, Arizona Cross, Michel Ouellette, David Martinez, Flor Cuevas, Nancy Alcantar, Ana Meyers and Dave Upah all from Arizona and Mark Dorion of Texas all competing.

The 6-Day race is a 144 hour endurance foot race usually conducted on a track or a road circuit. It is an individual, not a relay, event and is considered one of the longest standard ultra marathons.

The track Cross has composed at the 15th Street Park is a three-quarter mile circuit of grass and pavement. New York City is the only U.S. venue among a dozen or so 6-Day races held world wide. California races that were held in the 1980's and 1990's are now defunct.

Cross says there is a growing demand to have a 6-Day race in the Western USA.

The event is being sponsored by the Douglas Adult Education Association, the City of Douglas Parks and Recreation and the Thunder Mountain Running Club.
