The Douglas City Council unanimously approved appointing Letty Rodriguez as the interim city manager Wednesday afternoon.

Interim City Manager Letty Rodriguez

Rodriguez, a former city clerk for Douglas, will begin as interim on July 2.

"Because of her background in city operations and her past experience as interim city manager, we believe Letty is the best choice to fill the gap," said Douglas Mayor Ray Borane.

Borane said the city is now in the process of advertising the city manager position.

Although there is no target date for replacing the city manager, the council is eager to fill the position as soon as possible, he said.

"I will work closely with Letty to ensure a smooth transition, especially in terms of carrying current projects forward," said City Manager Mike Ortega.

Ortega leaves his position here on July 1 and begins his new position as county administrator for Cochise County on July 2.

He begins the transition phase on June 1.

"The city has lost a great city manager," Rodriguez said. "It will be very difficult to fill his shoes.

Rodriguez said she is happy to serve her community and is confident that she can run city government smoothly until the new replacement arrives.

Rodriguez has worked for the city since 1977. In 1989 she performed the duties of city clerk and in 1994 she was officially appointed as city clerk.

In 2004 she was named acting city manager and ran the city for eight months in late 2004 and part of 2005.
