Douglas native Gail Leon was selected by the Social Security Administration to lead its new Cal Central Area. She recently reported to Fresno to direct Social Security's programs in 23 Central California offices. The 525 employees under Gail's direction serve 965,000 residents who receive monthly checks from Social Security totaling over $10 billion every year. "I am very excited about working with the employees in my new area to provide the best service to the people of Central California," Leon said.

Gail has had a long career with Social Security in Arizona. She began her career with the Social Security Administration as an Account Number Clerk in Yuma. Her career brought her back to Douglas as a Claims Representative and in short time she was promoted to Operations Supervisor in Tucson. Most recently, Gail was the manager of Social Security's South Tucson office. She participated in the San Francisco Region's Leadership Development program in 2004 and in 2005 served three months as Deputy Area Director for their Northern Area in Sacramento, California.

Gail has been active in the Federal Executive Association, the Southern Arizona Chapter of Hispanic Employment Managers, and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She was awarded "Manager of the Year-2004" from the Council of Southern Arizona Hispanic Program Managers. Gail is a graduate of Douglas High School and Cochise College and is the daughter of the late John and Emma Hughes.
