One of the most frustrating aspects of traveling northbound at the port of entry is the slow-moving traffic.

In a Feb. 15, 2007 letter to De La Torre, Borane requested that Customs install SENTRI and FAST lanes.
"We believe that with the current cross-border traffic and particularly trade traffic, implementation of these important lane is vital to our community and country," Borane said in his letter.
A SENTRI lane is an electronic monitoring system that will allow vehicles and drivers to pass quickly through primary inspection.
FAST lane is a bilateral program between the United States and Mexico to enhance security, expedite customs processing and promote economic vitality by streamlining the clearance of trans-border shipments.
Borane said people must go through an application process in order to be eligible for the SENTRI lane. Basically, an applicant registers with a national database the vehicle that will be crossing through the port.
But in order for the Douglas Port of Entry to get a SENTRI lane, the Mexicans need to spend time and money in reconfiguring the northbound lanes in their port, Borane said.
"Agua Prieta Mayor Antonio Cuadras is on board with the proposed SENTRI and FAST lanes, Borane said. "It's now a matter of getting the Mexican government to agree."
If the SENTRI lane doesn't become a reality for the current port, the lane will no doubt be a big part of the new port of entry that has been proposed for Douglas, Borane said.
