BISBEE - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Naco Port of Entry arrested a 46-year-old Mexican man from Phoenix on Saturday after finding almost 48 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the dashboard of a Plymouth Neon he was driving.

It was one of 18 drug-smuggling attempts thwarted by CBP officers at Arizona ports of entry since Friday, the agency reported.

The busts resulted in the seizure of 2,037 pounds of narcotics with an estimated street value of $5.7 million, as well as the arrest of 23 people, according to a CBP press release.

Four people were arrested at the Douglas Port of Entry between May 27 and May 30, including a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, both of whom allegedly tried to smuggle marijuana into the U.S. in Buick Century cars.

The teenagers, both identified as residents of Sonora, Mexico, were arrested on consecutive days.

A 38-year-old Mexican man from Chihuahua and a 19-year-old Douglas resident were also arrested at the Douglas port and accused of smuggling marijuana.

In addition to the narcotics interceptions, CBP officers in Arizona also apprehended 24 fugitives, recovered five stolen vehicles, stopped 23 attempts to smuggle prohibited agricultural products into the U.S., and arrested seven people attempting to enter the country illegally.
