Douglas connection at CWS

There will be at Douglas connection at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. this weekend as the son of well known Douglas residents, Sergio Brown Sr. (who unfortunately passed away seven-years ago) and Socorre Araiza Brown will be leading his UC-Irvine baseball team up against Arizona State University Saturday afternoon in first round action.

Sergio Brown Jr. is the assistant coach for UCI Irvine which qualified for the trip to Omaha in a nail biting 9th inning that produced the winning run over Wichita State 3-2 in the Super Regional last weekend.

This is the first time UCI advances to the College World Series. Win or lose Saturday UC Irvine will play on Monday.

Sergio Jr. also played with Cal State Fullerton when Cal State Fullerton won a CWS championship.

Sergio has a lot of relatives in Douglas that are cheering for his team. His wife Olivia and son Vincent, his mother Socorro will attend the festivities in Omaha as well as his sisters Elena Brown and Liza. Brown Smith and his nephews Nicholas and Kai Smith. His uncle Hector and aunt Angie are currently residing in Omaha and are anxious to welcome the team. Also making the trip is Liza Brown-Smith's husband Jimmy.

According to the UCI website Brown begins his third season as an assistant coach with the UC Irvine Baseball program.

He is also the program's recruiting coordinator, has spearheaded UCI's recruiting efforts for the past three years. His endeavors most recently were recognized on the national level as the 2007 class was ranked 14th by Baseball America and 22nd by Collegiate Baseball. It was the program's first nod from Baseball America since 2002 and Collegiate Baseball's ranking of 22nd matches UCI's highest in the new era of Anteater Baseball.

On the field, Brown is responsible for the outfielders and also provides hitting instruction for the Anteater offense.

Prior to joining the UC Irvine staff, Brown was Cal State Fullerton's Director of Baseball Operations from 2002 to 2003, helping the Titans reach the College World Series in 2003. He served as an assistant recruiting coordinator, was the booster club liaison for the Titans and assisted in fund raising, acting as Director for the team's annual golf tournament.

Brown was also an assistant coach at Cypress College from 1995 to 2002, where he helped the Chargers to a California Community College state championship in 1997. At Cypress, Brown worked with the position players, instructed on base running while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Among those that Brown produced are current major league players Keith Ginter (Milwaukee Brewers) and Gerald Laird (Texas Rangers) as well as Cory Sullivan, who was an All-American at Wake Forest.

Brown played in 1995 for Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titans to their third national title and competed at Cal Poly Pomona from 1991-1993, winning a CCAA title in his first season.

Brown prepped at Mountain View High School, earning All-CIF honors. He holds a master's degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University and graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1995 with a B.A. in English.

Brown and his wife, Olivia, reside in Whittier with their son, Vincent.
