Workshop will teach Seniors to Fight Fraud

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona will host a free community workshop in Sierra Vista to help senior consumers protect themselves against scams.

Fighting Fraud will be Friday, July 27 from 1-3 p.m. at the Sierra Vista Library, 2600 E. Tacoma. Free refreshments, a prize drawing and informative handouts will be provided.

"Despite wide awareness of consumer fraud, some seniors have difficulty spotting it when it happens to them," says Kim States, BBB Public Affairs Director. "Criminals deliberately target seniors for several reasons. We'll share those reasons, and talk about some very simple steps seniors can take to avoid becoming victims."

The meeting is open to the public. Seniors and caregivers are especially encouraged to attend, and to bring any junk postal mail and email they have questions about. The BBB will sort through the mail to help them identify which pieces are most likely fraud. The BBB will then share tips on how to get off junk mail, email and telemarketing lists.

"We'll also review the most common forms of fraud targeted at seniors," States said.
