BISBEE - Armed with new grant money, the local judicial system is looking for justices of the peace pro-tem to provide fill-in services at Cochise County's six justice courts.

The justices will provide up to 160 total hours of service until June 30, 2008, and will cover the justice courts during conferences, emergencies and other situations in which the full-time justices are unavailable, Court Administrator Karen Ferrara said.

A new grant from the Arizona Supreme Court will fund the positions, Ferrara said. Justices of the peace preside over misdemeanor criminal cases, civil and criminal traffic court, and the initial appearances for some people charged with felonies in Superior Court.

Justices of the peace are not required to be licensed to practice law, but preference will be given to applicants who are.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest to Ferrara no later than July 31 at: Superior Court of Cochise County, P.O. Box 204, Bisbee AZ 85603. Applicants must be qualified voters, residents of Arizona for at least one year, and of good moral character.
