SIERRA VISTA - Thursday morning, a breach in a fiber-optic line just south of Mesa in Higley interrupted Cox Internet customers' service throughout Southeastern Arizona for much of the day.

The break in the line occurred at about 8:30 a.m., and most of the service was restored by about 3:30 p.m., Cox Communications spokesman Michael Dunne said.

The line that was cut is owned by Level 3 Communications Inc., the use of which is leased by Cox, Dunne said.

The line was reportedly severed by a contractor working for a railroad in that area, Dunne said.

Level 3 Communications spokeswoman Kimberly Tulp, working out of the Denver area, was only able to confirm that there was an interruption.

Throughout Cochise County, virtually all Cox high-speed Internet customers were without service, as well as some video and business customers, Dunne said.

Emergency communications services were not affected, according to Cochise County, Bisbee and Sierra Vista police dispatchers.

Sierra Vista City Hall fielded no calls about the area-wide service interruptions, spokeswoman Marie Hansen said, but the phone lines to the regional Cox headquarters in Phoenix were jammed.
