Some companies are fortunate to survive as they're passed from father to son, from one generation to another.

What is now called Maddux and Sons was started by W.D. Maddux, said Lenard Maddux, the current owner and grandson of W.D. Maddux.
W.D. moved to Douglas from Texas and started the gravel and sand business in the late 1930's.
"W.D. really love the outdoors, that's probably why he started the gravel and sand business, just to be in the outdoors," Maddux said. "But he also saw a very big need for this kind of service."
But when the United States entered World War Two, the economy tightened and it also hit the rock and gravel business.
"It was hard just to get parts for the trucks," Maddux said.
So by the 1940's W.D. had to shut down for a while. But by the end of the war, though, W.D.'s three sons, Rece, Cleb and Bill Jr. helped rebuild the company, and they started by repairing the trucks that hauled the sand and gravel.
The company grew with the help of W.D's three sons. Cleb and Bill Jr. eventually sold their stake to W.D. In time, Rece, Lenard's father, would eventually take over. The company incorporated in 1971.
In 1996 the company was moved to its current location at 4000 North Leslie Canyon Road, which is a few miles north of Douglas.
Lenard, and his two sons, Clint and Jimmy, now operate Maddux and Sons. The company hauls tons of redi-mix, sand, gravel, road base and concrete.
On average, they haul about 150,000 tons of sand and gravel a year.
