The Huachuca Art Association, a non-profit promoter of art and artists for over 36 years and sponsors of Art in the Park is proud to present a special show featuring Roderick E. Stevens II collection of works. Internationally collected and named "Artist of the Year" by the Sierra Vista Mayor's Arts Council, Mr. Stevens' work challenges the senses to ask, "Is that a photograph?"

His talents with acrylic and oil paints to capture reflected light on everyday objects in larger than life compositions has amazed and captivated people for years.

From the tender age of seven, he has explored painting, abstract expression and photorealism.

A cinematographer by trade, his painting became an "occasional hobby" until 2004 when his artistic talents were re-awakened and he ventured out "on the road" with examples of his work to share with the general public.

"I must admit that I love looking at more abstract works, but when compelled to place my own brush to canvas, I am drawn to photorealism.

As a cinematographer I am fond of light and optics...I enjoy incorporating elements of photography into my art, such as motion blur, depth of field and other artifacts not natural to human vision.

Most photorealist use photography as a step toward painting, but in a way, for me, the painting is an extension of my love of photography.

I sometimes like to add an extra dimension to my pieces by layering related objects or images onto the surface of the painting as if they've fallen onto the canvas.

I also feel it is important for me to express my gratitude for having been given this gift. I am quite convinced it is a gift of abundance from God, and I feel incredibly obligated to spread it around, so I am always on the lookout for places to donate my works so they might do others some good in some way".

In addition to the Gallery Show during the month of August, Mr. Stevens will be making a special presentation on September 15th at the Gallery from 10:00 a.m. - noon.

The presentation is open to the public and admission is free. He will also host a two day acrylic workshop at the Gallery on October 13 & 14. For details on all of these events, please contact Mr. Stevens at 520 459 3464 or at www.restevensart.com.
