ADEQ to continue monitoring sonoran air
A proposal by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to end air quality monitoring in Nogales and Agua Prieta, Sonora and to reduce monitoring of very fine particulate pollution in their Arizona sister cities was eliminated in August. "It was a draft proposal and was nixed by ADEQ Director Steve Owen," said ADEQ communications director Mark Shaffer.

Developers of the Bowie Power Station announced today that its electric generation facility planned for southeastern Arizona will move forward utilizing clean-burning natural gas as its sole fuel source.

Young fiddlers to participate in fiddle contest
Ellen Whitehead of McNeal, a member of the Cochise County Youth Orchestra, rehearses with the group in preparation for their lunchtime performance of fiddles tunes at the Sierra Vista Fiddle Contest. Many young orchestra members will also be competing in the youth divisions this year. Area residents are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Sierra Vista Fiddle Contest on Sept. 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Veterans' Memorial Park. Admission is free. All are welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket and be prepared for an exciting day of great music featuring the "Orange Blossom Special Blowout Competition." Fiddlers from all over the Southwest will compete for trophies and $3,000 in cash prizes. Buena Bands will provide food concessions and there will be many items for raffle, including two acoustic/electric guitars. Proceeds from the contest benefit the Cochise County Youth Orchestra.
