Juilliard graduate and University of Arizona piano faculty member Tannis Gibson will give a breathtaking, kaleidoscopic recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Sierra Vista. Sponsored by Cochise College Cultural Events, Gibson will play on the new Kawai concert grand at Kino Hall, 800 Taylor Drive.

Gibson's performances have been described as "luminous" (The Boston Globe) and "thoroughly captivating" (The Washington Post). A versatile musician and pianist, Gibson programs a diverse range of repertoire, pairing familiar with the unfamiliar, and mixing old with the new. Her artistry has been praised for its "brilliance, energy and personality" (Tucson Citizen).

The program sweeps from Mozart's Vienna, the Paris of Chopin and DeBussy, to the American 'Celestial Railroad' of Charles Ives and ragtime by William Albright.

Gibson has been heard in concert halls throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, including Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie), the Kennedy Center, Merkin Hall, Corcoran Gallery, National Gallery of Art and the Gardner Museum.

She has appeared as concerto soloist with the Shanghai Radio Orchestra in China, and presented a residency of concerts, master classes and radio broadcasts in Sofia, Bulgaria, as a guest of the National Academy of Music. She has recorded for CRI, ASV (London) and Summit Records. In 1995, the Monticello Trio's CD of Nicholas Maw's Piano Trio, with Gibson as pianist, was nominated for a Gramophone Award.

Live broadcasts include NPR's "Performance Today," NBC's "Today Show," WGBH Boston and WQXR New York.

She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Regina, where she graduated magna cum laude, and a master's from the Juilliard School, where she was a student of Sascha Gorodnitzki and Herbert Stessin. She has also studied privately with Eduardo del Pueyo in Belgium.

Gibson resides in Tucson and is assistant professor of music at the University of Arizona. Her students have been top prize winners in various competitions, including, most recently, the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston.

The performance is at 7 p.m. Friday Sept. 28 at Kino Hall, 800 Taylor Drive, Sierra Vista. Admission is $5 at the door, and youth 16 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
