The bad news continued as the district board reviewed the poor results of two elementary and its two middle schools during recent labeling by the state.

The Douglas Unified School District Governing Board reviewed the information during a special meeting on Wednesday.

Results of the process were released on Monday and showed that both Huber and Ray Borane were underperforming schools as were Joe Carlson and Sarah Marley elementary schools. During the labeling last year, both of the under performing elementary school were listed as performing.

This is the second year that Ray Borane has been listed as underperforming and the fourth consecutive year for Huber.

The Douglas Unified School District had four of the five schools listed as under performing in Cochise County.

Faras and Stevenson elementary schools were listed as Performing Plus, while Douglas High School and Clawson Elementary School were labeled as Performing.

The biggest concern is over Huber Middle School whose ranking has continue to drop in the area of reading English Language Learners (ELL).

The problems for all four schools revolved around reading

The one concern that permeates all four district schools having problems is because they were not reclassifying ELL students as they should have.

Due to its continuing problems, Huber will now have intervention from the state government to correct the problem.

During the meeting, Curriculum Director Leanne Marston presented information on why this happened and what need to happen to correct the problem.

One other problem that affected the reading scores was a change to a new reading series last year. She said it typically take a full year to get the program implemented and questioned on how prepared some instructors were in presenting the new program.

To see details on what Marston had to say, see Page 5.

While the problems seem severe in the two middle schools, it is less of a problem in the two elementary schools.

Sarah Marley missed the Performing classification only by .3 of 1 percent, while Joe Carlson missed it by only .1 of 1 percent.
