Running for office has always been the right of every American citizen.

Citizens interested in running for these offices can pick up nominating petitions at the City Clerk’s Office beginning Nov. 13, 2007. The deadline to file the petition to the clerk’s office is Dec. 12, 2007 in order for the candidate’s name to appear on the ballot.
Mayoral candidates must be at least 25 years of age and cannot hold any other paid public office. He or she must reside within the city limits for at least three consecutive years preceding the date of the election.
City council candidates must be a registered voter and be at least 21 years of age. He or she cannot hold a paid public office and must also live within the city limits for at least three years before the date of the election.
Under the city charter, incumbent mayor Ray Borane, Ward Three councilman Ben LaForge and Ward Five Councilman Ivan Huish are eligible for re-election.
Ward One Council Robert Marrufo cannot seek re-election.
Register to Vote
Eligible voters who have not registered have until Feb. 11. 2008 to register in order to vote in the primary election.
Registration forms are available at the City Clerk’s Office, at the Douglas Public Library at 560 E. Tenth Street, and at county government offices.
Only registered voters can sign nominating petitions. Douglas residents who are signing a candidate’s petition must be registered to vote in their ward.
