Former Douglas man charged in death of baby

A former Douglas man was arrested Oct. 26 in connection with the child abuse death of an18-day old boy.


Rene E. Barrios, 26, of the 5500 block of East 26th Street, was taken into custody and is being held on a $750,000 bond at the Pima County jail.

“We never had time to put a birth announcement in the newspaper for the baby, but now we have to put in the baby’s obituary,” said a family member of the baby’s mother, who asked that her name not be used.

The baby’s mother is also a former Douglas resident.

Police authorities in Tucson say that the death was not caused by accidental nor natural causes.

Authorities did not release the name of the baby or of the 23-year-old mother.

Barrios was a live-in boyfriend and not the baby’s father.

On Sunday at about 7:30 p.m. the mother of the baby went to the store to buy the baby some tea.

About 20 minutes later, when she returned and walked into her house, she found Barrios leaning over the baby, attempting to give it CPR. By then the baby had turned blue.

They called 911 and paramedics arrived and further attempted to give the child CPR. At one point they managed to catch a heartbeat.

The baby was transported to Tucson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are waiting for the autopsy before giving out more information on the baby’s injuries.

    " What is wrong with these people? They disgust me. Hopefully he will spend the rest of his life in jail. ( unfortunalty we as tax payers have to feed him in jail.) A baby is so innocent and does not deserve to be harmed in any way. My Thoughts and Prayers are for the family of the poor baby. "

    " This sickens me. I am a mother to a 1 year old and I can't imagine letting ANY person laying a hand on my child. This guy is gonna get his in prison cause we all know what they do to child abusers in prison. I bet my life savings the mother also knew of previous abuse this man inflicted on her son and she kept quiet. Shame on both of you. Nice to know that Douglas now has 2 baby killers as a result of child abuse on their girlfriends children. "
