For vacationers and businesspersons visiting Douglas, the UETA Duty Free Americas store is one of the great pleasures of visiting the border.

By Xavier Zaragoza/The Daily Dispatch A construction crew works on the UETA building. Workers will soon begin to install electrical and heating components.

At UETA, patrons can get cigarettes, liquor, watches, perfume and much more–all duty-free.

And it will only get better with the new UETA soon to open at 301 N. Chiricahua, which is behind Denny’s Restaurant.

UETA is scheduled to open in early February.

“The monsoon rains caused few set backs for the UETA construction,” said Robert Martin, the Chief Building Inspector for the City of Douglas.

Heavy rains had flooded the construction site. As a result, the crew had to drain the area from the standing water and had to wait for it to dry before moving heavy machinery onto the site, Martin said.

The construction crew has begun setting up the beams and will soon be installing the electrical, heating and cooling components followed by installation of the sheetrock.

In the last phase the crew will complete the parking lot and the landscaping.

The store will be a two-story building that includes a basement.

For now, UETA patrons can visit the old UETA store on the corner of Pan American and First Street.
