SIERRA VISTA — The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office seized 907 pounds of pot concealed in the sleeper compartment of a Mexican semi-rig on Thursday during a traffic stop near Elfrida.

The operator of the rig, Gabriel Garcia Martinez, 38, is a Mexican national who had a valid border-crossing visa, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

He was taken into custody and booked at the county jail on charges of possession of marijuana and transportation of marijuana. The vehicle and marijuana were seized as evidence.

At about 3:24 p.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a semi-truck/trailer rig on Highway 191 at mile post 41, north of the unincorporated Elfrida settlement.

The deputy originally observed Martinez operating the truck while the vehicle registration was expired, and having two equipment violations on the rig as well.

Further investigation at the traffic stop led to the discovery of the marijuana, Capas said.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
