As Christmas soon approaches, one should see this holiday as a time of giving to the less fortunate.

A simple way to give is by either donating money to the Salvation Army Bell Ringers or becoming a bell ringer for a day on any given weekend beginning the day after Thanksgiving.

“There are many kind and generous people in Douglas and when they volunteer their time with the Bell Ringers, they help the less fortunate in the community such as young children and the elderly,” said Anna Luna, the Salvation Army’s Board President.

The Salvation Army is actively seeking volunteers for their weekend kettle drives.

The money collected from these kettle drives go toward helping residents with their heating or lighting bills, which can often be very high during the winter.

Staff at the Salvation Army has also helped people with food, warm clothing and other necessities, Luna sad.

“In essence, we try to help those who are truly in need,” she said.

But helping those truly in need requires volunteers donating their time to the drives.

Luna said the volunteers each year have been responsible for raising money and, in the end, the holiday spirits of the less fortunate in Douglas.

Of the many Kettle Drive volunteers, the staff will certainly miss Lupita Saavedra, a Bell Ringer that had donated her time to the drive for the last four years. Saavedra recently passed away.

For more information on becoming a Bell Ringer call Tina Jaime at 364-4793 or Anna Luna at 439-3597.
