DOUGLAS — About 60 members of the Cochise County Historical Society recently gathered at the Gadsden Hotel in Douglas last Sunday for their annual meeting.

The nonprofit historical society was founded more than 35 years ago to study and preserve the history of Cochise County. The group publishes a journal twice a year focusing on the history of the area and maintains an extensive photo collection.

Following an elegant dinner, members enjoyed a presentation by County Treasurer Marsha Bonham on the history of railroads in Cochise County. County Supervisor Richard Searle also shared information on a few of the old county jails.

New officers were elected for the upcoming year. Bisbee resident Chris Overlock was elected president, with Dan Pollack becoming vice president, Liz Ames continuing as treasurer, and Rebecca Orozco as secretary.

The society, which serves all of Cochise County, is embarking on a new collaboration with Cochise College for the production of the semi-annual journals.

With this new partnership, students in various departments will have an opportunity to apply their skills on a respected publication, taking the content provided by the society to create a journal that is mailed to history buffs across the country.

“We have ambitious goals for 2008,” Overlock said. “New members and volunteers are especially welcome at this time.”
