COCHISE COUNTY -  In order to meet the increasing demands on the county solid waste system, the County Solid Waste Management Department has announced that effective December 1, 2007, the hours at the 5 urban transfer stations will increase and will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“As the county grows, so does the amount of trash,” says Mr. Marty Haverty, Director.

“We want to better serve our customers not only by expanding our hours but also by aligning the hours of operation at all five urban transfer stations. “

Only the transfer stations in Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Sierra Vista and Wilcox will be affected, the Western Regional Landfill will remain open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For questions, contact the Solid Waste Department at 432-9750.

" I am a winter visitor to Douglas. One thing that I've found in many areas is the lack of information to residents regarding the disposal of most environmentally unfriendly products. So rather than disposing of them properly, we all know where they end up. I asked at a couple of auto service garages and auto parts stores for the proper location to disposes of antifreeze. Nobody knew. Where do they probably dispose of their antifreeze? Antifreeze should be disposed of properly. I checked the website for the Douglas Transfer Station & it's indicated that they take it. Doesn't indicate whether or not there is a charge though. Your water supply in Arizona or anywhere else simply can't be getting contaminated with oils, antifreeze and the like. Please make an effort to publicize this. Your newspapers should be happy to be carrying it often as a public service and all service garages and stores that carry anything auto related should be posting that proper disposal is necessary and available at the Douglas Transfer Station. I noted that several other transfer stations in the area accept it as well. Thank you all for being conscientious. An Out-of State Visitor. Yes, I am concerned about YOU too! "
