SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. – The Cochise Community Foundation awarded more than $55,000 in 2007 to 17 organizations in Cochise County and Agua Prieta, Sonora, 20 percent more than was awarded in 2006.

PHOENIX — Students now in eighth grade will need an additional year of math to graduate from high school under a new policy adopted unanimously Monday by the state Board of Education.
Gas prices vary across the county
According to the Cochise College Center for Economic Research’s latest biweekly survey of gas prices, conducted during the week of December 3, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Cochise County increased to $3.00 from $2.99 over the two-week period. According to AAA Arizona, the statewide price decreased from $3.02 to $3.01. Nationally, according to the Energy Information Administration, gas prices dropped from $3.10 to $3.06 during the two-week period.

The swearing in of a new council member and a decision concerning the stalled construction of the Best Western Motel on Pan American and 7th Street is due to be discussed during the regular meeting of the Douglas City Council tomorrow, Wednesday, December 12.
Breakfast with Santa
Approximately 300 children and adults came to the Douglas Elks Lodge on Saturday to enjoy an all-you-can-eat pancakes and meet Santa Claus. More than 800 pancakes and 200 sausage were served during this annual event. it was sponsored by The Daily Dispatch and participating merchants. After telling Santa his fondest wish, each child received a candy cane and toy.

SIERRA VISTA — Three Mexican men were in custody Thursday in connection to an incident in which a woman was tied up with rope and locked in a bathroom a day earlier in Pearce.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

‘For the Love of Music’ to present ‘Musica Sonora’ this weekend
“For the Love of Music” will present, on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 concerts by Musica Sonora, a vocal ensemble of 16 musicians specializing in Early Music. They call this program for the holidays “With Mirth and Good Cheer: a Traditional English Christmas”. Musica Sonora will present a lively mix of “a cappella” selections, instrumental offering and songs accompanied by a variety of instruments — flute, recorder, guitar and viol. The program will include traditional English carols and other seasonal works both medieval and modern.
