Local Leadership Academy still accepting applications for the 2008 schedule

The Douglas Leadership Academy 2008 is still accepting applications for its upcoming schedule.


The academy offers citizens an opportunity to participate in a community-based education program where citizens can:

√ Know their community.

√ Gain an awareness of community resources and organizations.

√ Build collaborative relationships.

√ Discover volunteer opportunities in the community.

Applications can be picked up at the Douglas Visitors Center, 345 16th Street. Applications are due by the end of business on Friday, December 14, and notification of acceptance is by December 17. Classes begin on January 10.

What is the program about?

The Douglas Leadership Academy, sponsored by the City of Douglas and APS, will be held Thursdays beginning January 10 over nine weeks from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

According to academy sponsors, the curriculum will be informative and interactive, offering participants the opportunity to learn the complex workings of city government and not-for-profit organizations and opportunities to serve as a volunteer.

The nine sessions will include:

√ Session 1 – Welcome reception, Introduction to the academy, what it means to be a leader.

√ Session 2 - Organizational Leadership – City Manager/County Manager overview and Administrative Services.

√ Session 3 – City Mayor/City Council Candidate Forum.

√ Session 4 – Finance/Budget

√ Session 5 – Border Patrol/Public Safety Tour

√ Session 6 - Public Works, Community Development

√ Session 7  - Education, Economic Development

√ Session 8 – Non-profit community

√ Session 9 – Graduation dinner and guest speaker.
