Santa Claus was out looking for all the good children and he found some at the Head Start school. There, he handed out presents to the children. SAN DIEGO — U.S. Border Patrol agents are firing tear gas and powerful pepper-spray weapons across the border into Mexico to repel what the agency says are an increasing number of attacks by assailants hurling rocks, bottles and bricks.
More than 900 pounds of pot seized near Bisbee
SIERRA VISTA — Sunday an anonymous call to the U.S. Border Patrol station in Naco led to seizure of more than 900 pounds of marijuana in the unincorporated Palominas area west of Bisbee.
Corbett can’t preclude witnesses
TUCSON — A U.S. District Judge denied a motion Monday seeking to prevent three witnesses from testifying at the upcoming trial of Nicholas Corbett, a Border Patrol agent charged with murdering an illegal immigrant near Naco.
Passport Fair
A total of 174 new passport applications were completed as a result of the Passport Fair sponsored by the county. More than 250 people were helped during the event, which was more than double the number in Bisbee the previous week. Seventy percent of those helped were assisted during the first three hours, and the large number of people lined up for the event forced the county to open a half-hour early. Mary Edie, Administrative Division Manager, said there is a possibility there may be a second fair after the first of the year. The passport requirement is expected to be strictly enforced beginning in the spring or summer.
Man faces assault charges in shooting
BISBEE — A man who shot his neighbor during a disagreement on Aug. 13 in Elfrida will appear in Cochise County Superior Court for two hearings next week.

PHOENIX — A federal judge said Tuesday that the interests of Arizonans at the bottom of the economy may trump any hardships on businesses forced to comply with the state’s new employer sanctions law.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.
Tax counseling for the elderly, volunteer income tax assistance in Cochise, Santa Cruz counties
In Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties, free tax services are provided by AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Vounteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
CER continues to push for BLCI in Cochise County
Over the past year, the Cochise College Center for Economic Research has continued to work in partnership with Compass Bank and the Economic and Business Research Center at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management to bring the Business Leaders Confidence Index® to Cochise County. Our first big step toward realizing this goal came in March of this year during the annual Sierra Vista Economic Focus Luncheon, when BLCI surveys were distributed to attendees. Since then, the CER has distributed the surveys at its economic luncheons in Benson and Bisbee.

BISBEE, AZ – Bisbee is growing and so is the SAMPOE Gallery. Opened in September of 2006 in a converted car mechanic’s garage across from the iconic Iron Man statue, this delightful open-air gallery has quickly outgrown its space and is moving to the historic Letson Block at 24 Main Street. The artists, husband and wife, Poe Dismuke and Sam Woolcott, are making final preparations for the move that will take place – just in time for the holidays. The walls are painted – ready for hanging artwork – and the flooring and electric should be completed by the end of this week.
St. David artist gave life's work to promote learning
Hundreds of art pieces to be displayed at the Cochise College Benson Center this fall will be sold to raise funds for college scholarships.
Chamber players perform Oct. 26
Full of old-world grace, charm and, occasionally, fury, the Daystar Chamber Players present a face-to-face, quadraphonic experience of two violins, a viola and a cello at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at the Sierra Vista Community United Church of Christ. The concert is brought to Sierra Vista by Cochise College Cultural Events.
