Douglas residents decided to play it safe and enjoy the holiday season with friends and family.

The Douglas Police Department reported that New Year’s Eve was quiet in Douglas with no major incidents, said Marcus Gonzalez, the spokesman for DPD.

Typically, residents here will bring in the New Year by shooting their firearms at the sky at the stroke of midnight. Often, though, shooters will decide to bring in the New Year an hour or two before midnight.

This year, though, the police department received very few reports of shots fired. Although there was some gunfire in town, it seems that for the most part Douglas residents resisted discharging their guns and rifles.

Douglas police also made very few arrests. Gonzalez said.

The police had a regular patrol crew and one DUI officer. The DUI officer made no arrests between Dec.31 and Jan.1, Gonzalez said.

The police did make six arrests that involved court order violations or criminal damage.
