With major shifts and changes occurring within the Douglas City Council, 2008 may prove to be an interest time for voters and city government.

Incumbent Mayor Ray Borane announced that he will not seek re-election. With that announcement, two members of city council submitted their council resignation in order to pursue the mayoralty.

Three Douglas residents have filed their mayoral packets.

The mayoral candidates are:

Michael Gomez; Michael “Smokey” Molina; and Cruz Silva.

Only Gomez and Molina have, though limited, experience with city government. Silva has none.

Molina was councilman for Ward 6; Gomez was councilman for Ward 4.

When both Gomez and Molina announced their resignation, Borane appointed Ray Shelton to Ward 4 and Jose L. Acedo to Ward 6.

Several councilmen will be facing challengers in the 2008 primary and general elections.

In Ward 1 Margaret Morales; Alfredo Garcia; and Bill Wendt will be vying for that council seat.

In Ward 3 incumbent Ben Laforge will be challenged by Robert C. Fernandez.

In Ward 4, newly appointed Shelton will be challenged by Frank Ambriz.

In Ward 5, incumbent Ivan Huish is running unopposed.

In Ward 6, newly appointed councilman Acedo will also run unopposed.

The primary elections will be held on March 11, 2008. The general elections will be held on May 20.
