TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A poll released Friday found that illegal immigration registers as a serious problem for a strong majority of people living in four Southwestern states.

The poll by Arizona State University’s Institute for Social Science Research found that 58 percent of the people polled in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Nevada believe illegal immigration is a very serious problem, while another 27 percent believe it’s a somewhat serious problem.

Nine percent say it’s not too serious of a problem. Five percent say it’s not a problem at all.

The telephone poll of 1,013 adults was taken from Nov. 6 to Dec. 19 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

On another question, more than a third of those polled say immigrants have helped their state more than they hurt it. A nearly equal proportion of people say immigrants have both hurt and helped their state about the same amount.

Twenty-two percent say immigrants have hurt their state more than they helped it.

" I lived in Arizona for 33 years and left in 2003...I was considering returning but the illegal immigration problem is worse on that side of the country. The only way to stop them is to take away all the freebies that we, as taxpayers contribute to and have no access to ourselves. Our government needs to be held accountable for all the problems these illegals have created in this country and the burden put on us. Why should I, born and raised in this country by LEGALS, have to work all my life and support ILLEGALS "

" Why do Americans care if someone comes from another country to seek a better life? I will bet anything that the people who complain that it is a problem had relatives come from a different country to seek a better lifestyle. Yeah, it's illegal, but why not make it legal. It seems as if Americans discriminate against people of Mexican heritage. If you are a protester of Irish decent then ask yourself how your ancestors liked being descriminated against in the late 1800's. The "illegals" are the same as your ancestors, just coming over at a different time in history. "
