Built in the 1900’s, Castro Park is the oldest park in Douglas. As a result, the park has been used by many generations of Douglas residents. Over the years people have held a variety of events at Castro Park, ranging from Halloween parties to political events.

Xavier Zaragoza/The Dailly Dispatch The city construction crew and inmate labor are installing a decorative entranceway fence like the one finished at 9th Street.

This year the City of Douglas has scheduled some improvements that will make the park an even better place to visit.

The city will plant about 16 new trees, construct new restrooms, replace the center concrete area with a new flower design and install several electrical outlets throughout the park.

The city construction crew and inmate labor are also installing a decorative entranceway fence.

“Years ago there was a pergola at the entrance to Castro Park,” said Chuck Ebner, the Community Development Director for the City of Douglas. “The Pergola was removed years ago due to safety issues. The new entrance is designed to complement the early 1900 homes adjacent to the park.”

Ebner said the entrance design will be made of red brick with iron fencing similar to what is found in the surrounding homes.

The shuffleboard court was also removed so that room can be made for a fountain. The area will include grass, benches, shade trees and some decorative sidewalk, Ebner said.

“We are very proud of the way this park has evolved over the years,” he said. “Keeping the parks looking nice has always been an extraordinarily difficult. Our excellent park staff has done a great job.”

" It's strange to think of the shuffleboard courts going away. As a kid growing up in Douglas, there was hardly a day when the "the old gents of Douglas" were not seen enjoying a shullfleboard game. Don't know if any money was exchanged, but they were enjoying themselves. Where will "the old gents of Douglas" play now? Maybe the game has gone away with the ages. Sad. "
