Legislators have grim assessment of state economy

PHOENIX (AP) -Arizona legislators are hearing grim assessments of the economy and its impact on state budgeting.

Two top Arizona economists told lawmakers during an unusual joint House and Senate briefing on Tuesday that economic growth is not expected to appreciably pick up for at least a year, due mainly to the slumping housing market.

That spells trouble for the state’s own budget because spending demands for education and other services will keep growing at a time when state revenue will be relatively stagnant.

The briefing came one day after Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano told lawmakers that they shouldn’t overreact to the budget situation by making harsh cuts or foregoing making investments for the future.
