Ending a three-month long process, the Douglas Unified School Board officially accepted the settlement and resignation of former Huber Middle School principal George Watkins Thursday afternoon.

The board came to the decision after a 35-minute executive session yesterday. The board continued the subject of Watkin’s resignation from a meeting the previous day. They discussed the matter in a 55-minute executive session during a Wednesday, January 16, meeting but failed to come to a final decision and recessed the meeting until Thursday.
Watkins had been accused of misappropriation of funds in two separate sets of charges.
Information on the settlement was not available at presstime because Watkins had not yet signed the settlement.
Superintendent Gail Zamar said she could not comment further except the district is looking to move forward with the resolution of this situation. Assistant County Attorney Candace Pardee, who acts as the school district’s attorney, was out of town and unavailable for comment.
The Douglas Police Department said they are still pursuing an independent investigation of the charges.
